Lord of the Rings Online, You Shall Not Pay

Going big.

With up to 263,000 players per month, Lord of the Rings Online multi-user dungeon required nothing short of a giant debut of their free-play system. The project’s creative called for locations with millions of fans, to be produced on a one day shoot and one week vfx schedule from picture lock. This deadline, the proximity of the camera to foreground talent and prop direction inspired us to avoid the long development times and costs associated with cg crowds. Our solution rested in a critical pre-production plan - strategizing the most efficient way to shoot a group of 50 extras within six hours to naturally populate four locations over five shots. The result? On time and on budget.
